EVERY CHILD SHOULD BE FULLY IMMUNIZED BY AGE 2
Immunizations are considered one of the medical marvels of the 20th century and are the reason for the eradication of smallpox and the major decline of 11 other diseases. Many people are not aware that these diseases can have severe consequences including crippling, deafness, blindness and death. Although some of these diseases are not seen often in our community, we must realize that other parts of the world are not as fortunate and these diseases may be only a plane ride away.
Some parents may hesitate to give their children a vaccine because they're concerned about serious reactions or that their children may get the illness the vaccine is supposed to prevent. However, vaccines are unlikely to cause any serious illness because the components of vaccines are weakened or killed, or in some cases only parts of the microorganism are used. Some vaccines may cause mild reactions, such as soreness where the shot was given or fever, but serious reactions are rare. The risks of vaccinations are small in comparison to the health risks associated with the diseases vaccines are intended to prevent.
Infants are more vulnerable to disease because their immune systems cannot easily fight off disease-causing bacteria and viruses. In addition, the effects of disease are often more serious in infants than in older children. That’s why it’s important to have your infant immunized on time. Check the childhood immunization schedule on this website to see when the next shots are due for your child.
