Influenza Vaccination Coverage Among Children Aged 6-23 Months Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (09/26/08) According to data from the 2007 National Immunization Survey, 31.8 percent of U.S. children aged six to 23 months received one or more doses of flu vaccine and just 21.3 percent were fully vaccinated against the disease. In 2004, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended annual flu vaccines for children in this age range. The data varied significantly among states, with Mississippi recording the lowest rate of full flu vaccination at 8.6 percent. Rhode Island had the highest rate of full flu vaccination for this age group, at 47.6 percent. "The continuing low influenza vaccination coverage described in this report underscores the need to identify innovative strategies for increasing influenza vaccination coverage among young children," the researchers noted. Starting this year, ACIP has recommended that all children five to 18 years of age get vaccinated against the flu, in addition to children six to 59 months of age, for whom the vaccine was already recommended.
